If a potential visitor to Canada asked me to suggest the "quintessential Canadian experience," I'd have to pause and think. Go to a hockey game? No, there are professional hockey teams all over the world these days. Upon reflection, I'd have to say that the ultimate Canadian experience has to involve wildlife, wilderness, fresh air and pure water. Cowboys and horses. Ride a mountain bike, raft a river, wrestle a bear. (Well, maybe not the bear.) Harvest food straight from the land, cook up a storm.

I think that Echo Valley Ranch sums up all that is great about Canada. Norm and Nan Dove welcome visitors to the ranch like it is their home. I felt more relaxed visiting with Norm and Nan than any resort I've ever visited in the world. Nan brings an exotic taste of the orient with Thai yoga sessions, world class massages from Thai experts, tasty Thai food once a week, and the warmth and smiles for which the Thais are known.

Ride a horse through the woods or walk the pastures guided by playful border collies while watching the sunset over the mountains to the west. Inhale the pure mountain air, catch the aroma of fine food wafting down wind from the lodge, listen to the silence.

I've been lucky enough to visit the ranch several times and my feelings have always been the same. Once past the gates, stress falls away like autumn leaves. The clamour and hustle of the big city fades away to blissful silence, serenity is the watchword, sanity the result. There's really no place like Echo
